Vegan Soul Kitchen

I predict that Vegan Soul Kitchen, by Bryant Terry, just may get an award or two this year for being such an amazing, unique, and delicious vegan cookbook.  When Da Capo Publishing told me the name of this book they were sending me I got chills down my spine.  An entire book on vegan soul food sounded amazing.   I just hoped the recipes would live up to the name.  When I received the book in the mail my heart fluttered with excitement.  Just by the look of it, I just knew.  I knew this book would be delicious.  And I was right.

Not only has Terry included interesting writing, 150 recipes for food, drink, and canning, but he has a sound track listed for each and every recipe in his book!  So before you start reading the list of ingredients and directions, you can read the suggested cooking soundtrack for that song and really get in the proper soul food cooking mood.  Black-Eyed Pea Fritters with Hot Pepper Sauce, Savory Triple-Corn Grits, and Succotash Soup with Garlicky Cornbread Croutons are just a few recipes to jam to in Vegan Soul Kitchen.

If you enjoy flipping through cookbooks to find your nightly meal, you'll love the uniqueness of the recipes in this book.  If you're a food blogger or chef, you'll love the inspiration these recipes bring you.   Vegan Soul Kitchen is a staple that every health-conscious, vegetarian, or vegan household needs to have.   Even if you aren't a fan of cooking or cookbooks, you'll need this book to be on your shelf for special occasion cooking!

I'm working on becoming Vegan and this cookbook would help a lot!

I'd love this book because I think soul food naturally has more character than a lot of other types of cuisine. Plus, I haven't had any for years, :D

I have no money to buy another cookbook, but I have been cooking both professionally and not for pretty much my whole life. I am currently trying to write a heathy way to eat, and change things about your life, veggie directed cookbook without entirely eating vegan. I think this book will help inspire me! I love al things food, but have always tried to incorporate different, veggie ingredients, I have never thought of soul food veggie!!!!

I found you on Twitter, this book sounds great and I am passing it on to my Vegan friends. I love southern style cooking and have been a strict Vegan for over a year. Thanks for passing on the info...

I love veggies. I will eat any and all veggies and having some new ways to prepare them would be just awesome!

I'm involved with a vegan potluck group in Las Vegas. We get together several times a month to share dishes and recipes and we're all usually looking for something new and exciting to share with each other. My husband and I (both strict vegans) love to cook and Southern food was a favorite of ours before becoming vegan. I'm a graphic designer, promoting my business to other vegan and environmentally-friendly businesses. I'd love to promote this book on my website.

I've been a vegan for about 10 years, but it has become more important to me since being diagnosed with breast cancer. I'm trying to be as healthy as possible which to me means vegan.

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterRealitygal

This has been a cuisine I've avoided since turning vegan...I would love to know how to create the stick-to-your ribs meals I remember from my childhood!

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKit

I live in the South but I could certainly use more soul - especially if it's vegan-style!

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterChris

I would be interested to have this vegan cookbook. So, at times when I get a variety of veggies, which, I do confess, I must eat more of,then I can make them taste more appealing than I currently know how.

I must study my cooking to get this skill higher. And the vegan cookbook would be a handy little book to have on a nearby table to study.

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJ.Mintuck

I would love this book because I am originally from the South and have missed good southern food since going vegan. There is just no veganizing some of my old family recipes!

Thanks for the giveaway. You rock, and I'll be retweeting as snowboardbunny.

Great review! I can't wait to check out the book. I think I deserve to win because I've been promoting the heck out of it on my own blog but the publishers haven't offered me a review copy :( ... I must resort to begging for one on other friendly vegan blogs! Even if I don't when, it's so exciting to finally see an awesome book like this in print.

I have not seen this book in person because the dumb bookstores locally have a crappy selection of veggie/vegan cookbooks. But I love black eyed peas and grits, so it has to be good, right? Maybe i need to try a bookstore in a college town. And now I need to eat my own black eyed peas chili I made last week. Don't ya just love freezers??

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJan Scholl

Oh, man. This cookbook! During the winters, I crave soul food and occasionally, I'd love to make it in my own house instead of schlepping down to the South Side for vegan soul grub. Plus, I've got to start this kid I'm carrying off right with a fantastic palate.

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterShylo

I will love this book because I'm vegan and I'm addicted to collecting books - especially cookbooks.

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermarika @ madcap

I will love this book because I have no experience with Soul food so it'll teach me new culinary things and new ways to make up a meal.

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered Commentertuimeltje

Wow. I would love to have this book! I have been wanting to become a vegan for a while, but I don't have a lot of meal ideas. I think this would really help me out a bunch!

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSiara

I have not had a lot of experience with southern cooking. I found an article one time in "Vegetarian Times" that featured some soul cooking. I really enjoyed the food, and actually found out I like black eyed peas! I love cookbooks and the inspiration they give me to cook and enjoy great food. I get out of my comfort zone and experiment.

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKrunsdogs

What a great giveaway! I grew up on southern comfort food... it would be great to try some authentic vegan versions!

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVegan_Noodle

Being from the South, your review is speaking to my heart! I will have to have this book. Have to.

March 6, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterVeganMama

Ooo! A vegan cookbook! I love vegan cooking and I love new cookbooks! I'm a lacto-vegetarian/border-line vegan. More yummy vegan recipes are always wanted in my life.

March 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterKrysta

I just heard about this book the other day and it looks amazing! I'm particularly attracted to the de-emphasis on "weird" things like TVP. I love TVP, but my family tends to be wary of soy-based foods.

March 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJuji

Sounds like a really interesting cookbook!

March 9, 2009 | Unregistered Commentermaggie

Ooh, I've been excited about this book for a while. I'd love to get my hands on a copy.

March 9, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJaime

I don't know how to cook soul/southern food. Contrary to popular belief, Texas cuisine is not "southern" it's just a whole different ball game. And Indian and Asian food is flavorful and naturally vegan a lot of times, but it's just not the same as the simplicity of biscuits and grits!

So, It would be nice to have a jumping off point -and the fact that it's vegan is even better!

March 9, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterasha

Heidi at 101cookbooks just wrote about this cookbook today. I'd love a copy!

I've actually been waiting for a vegan cookbook like this! When I wasn't vegan I worked a few blocks from a family run soul restaurant that we would go to as a treat, oh my gosh how good it was! Sometimes the family would bring us a few items from the restaurant because they used our services. I am so excited about this book!

March 9, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdreaminitvegan

I looked over the table of contents this morning and this book has so many "must-make-now" recipes. Also, how lovely that he includes soundtracks for each recipe. I know music is such a crucial part of my kitchen, I just never had it pointed out so blatantly.

Thank you for having this contest!!

I am from Kentucky and my omni boyfriend is a born and raised Southern boy, so a vegan soul food book is speaking volumes to me. I think if I could get him and his family to appreciate some veggie soul cooking, I could get him to make the switch to veggie. I also think boyfriend is getting sick of me making the same recipes from my other vegan cookbooks.

March 9, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCrystal

I'm from Colorado, which is definitely NOT southern, and my omni boyfriend is from Kentucky, which is totally southern, but we live in Texas, which southish. I'd love to learn to cook the things he grew up eating, so I could make him happy and encourage him to eat vegan food more often.

Seriously, I'm a pretty good cook, but I need help with the southern stuff; I can make a pretty good béchemal, but cannot even manage an edible cream gravy.

Awesome book. Picking one up for my daughter today and then hopefully I win the other one for myself.

Great recipes, easy to understand. Great pictures!!

Thanks so much for offering this!!

It looks like a beautiful way to add to my vegan repertoire. Asian (Indian, in particular) are favorites. But the one time I had the opp to eat vegan soul food, I was blown away. I'd cherish this book. What a great contest. Thank you!

Oh wow. This book would help us so much. My husband and I went Vegan about two weeks ago now. We're trying to get healthier and lose weight. He's a chef by trade, and healthy cooking isn't exactly in his nature (anything with a cream sauce rocks) so this book will greatly help us. We've dropped all meat, dairy, and eggs and we really need some new food ideas. We've been eating a lot of beans and veggie wraps so far.

March 13, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterTlestrogen

I just got my copy for the publisher for review! I'm so excited.

Awesome guys, I'm glad everyone so excited about this book! It is a must have, in my opinion and I hope you all go pick up a copy if you didn't win my giveaway. Lets all support Bryant Terry in the work he does, spread the word about Vegan Soul Kitchen!
