Oprah talks with Michael Pollan

Oprah sits down with Michael Pollan, food activist, author and writer for the  New York Times, for a chat about grocery shopping. This is an absolute must see. If you have this episode TiVo'ed, let me know, I'll take a copy.

Hey Jenn!

It is Diana from the Mayberry's get together. Have you read his book? I have been interested in reading it for awhile now...
Also - do you keep a budget when you grocery shop? I know my husband and I are huge savers and would love to invest more into our health - how to you keep a healthy diet at an affordable price?

Thanks!

Hey Diana, thanks for the comment and for visiting!

I haven't read his book but I've heard lots of reviews on it and am definitely interested in reading it. He doesn't advocate a completely vegetarian diet, so I know our opinions differ somewhat, but he has some great ideas and research. I soak it up!

As far as budget goes, my husband and I spend budget ourselves at about $125 a week on food (grocery or eating out). Sometimes we spend $150 but sometimes we spend $80, just depending on how stocked the pantry is. I'll write a post on this subject soon to go more in depth on it, but overall I find that when I don't spend money on a lot of prepackaged foods or junk foods then I end up spending much less by buying whole foods only. I cook a lot from scratch or mostly from scratch. Not buying chips, dairy, meat, soda, bottled water, eggs, bagged snack foods, desserts and all of those prepackaged convenience foods really helps the budget a TON. Sure, I buy a bag of chips for D here or there and a store-bought dessert once every month or two... But practicing moderation in the truest sense of the word for prepackaged snacks and cutting out animal products has helped our budget big time.

Budgeting and managing TIME (for prepping food, etc) is more of a task than budgeting money. Good for you for wanting to tweak your grocery list. You're right, it's definitely an investment in your health!
